Coach Vale — Explain-Back Tutor

A Socratic AI tutor for California CSLB (contractor license) exam prep. The learner picks an answer and explains their reasoning. Coach Vale never just gives the answer — it probes with guiding follow-up questions and tracks pass probability across turns.

What it does

Presents a CSLB-style multiple-choice question. After the learner selects an option and types a short explanation, Groq (llama-3.3-70b-versatile) replies with a Socratic coaching turn: it names what the learner got right, surfaces what they missed, and asks one guiding follow-up. Pass probability updates each turn.

Inputs

Learner's selected answer option (A–D) + free-text explanation of their reasoning. Conversation history passed across up to 3 turns.

Outputs

Socratic coaching reply with guiding follow-up question. Pass-probability meter update each turn. Depth rating (surface / partial / deep) shown in-bubble after each Coach Vale response.

How this demo works
  • Select any option and edit the pre-filled explanation, then click Submit & Coach Me.
  • The real system prompt from /api/explain-back is used verbatim: Socratic, ≤80 words, one follow-up per turn, plain language (8th-grade).
  • LLM call via same-origin /api/groq proxy — no key in this file.
  • Deterministic fallback returns a realistic scripted coaching turn if offline or the proxy is unavailable.
  • Pass-probability nudges +8–+16 pp per engaged turn, −4 if explanation is very short.
